A new study has found that male Weddell seals use "unique underwater vocalizations," making them the first animals to be identified as communicating with their own gender.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the University of California, San Diego, have been studying the animals' habits in the South Atlantic for the past eight years.

The scientists recorded the seals' underwater vocalizations, dubbed "epoch calls," while feeding and after molting. While this sounds like a lot of time spent underwater, it's not uncommon for a male Weddell seal to molt all over his body at one time.

The researchers' findings were published in the Royal Society journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

"The vocalizations that we found were always emitted in pairs, and there was a definite male/female pair in each pair," said study co-author John Nikitenko, UMass Amherst marine mammal biologist. "In some cases, the seals were actively fighting over the right to mate or were engaging in active courtship."

Nikitenko continued: "This was, quite literally, a new species we discovered."

Huge arrays of bubble-like structures on Weddell seals' heads help them swim. These structures help the animals process air as water. They are also used as a defense mechanism.

"Since these bubble structures are housed in bony sockets in the skull, they can break or become dislodged if the seal is attacked by a predator," said study co-author Carol Cramp, a behavioral biologist at the University of California, San Diego. "Although a bite can be a painful experience, it does not appear to be disabling, at least in the short term."

Weddell seals are predominantly a male-dominated population with the first seal to mate taking home the "coveted" female. As the pups grow older, they become more aggressive and begin to take over the hunting areas.
